All the morning since he got up he had been trying to fight through his duties__eaning against a hope__ hope that first had bowed, and then had broke as soon as he really tried its weight. There was not a sign of Sylvia__ liking for him to be gathered from the most careful recollection of the past evening. It was of no use thinking there was. It was better to give it up altogether and at once. But what if he could not? What if the thought of her was bound up with his life; and that once torn out by his own free will, the very roots of his heart must come also?

Some things are hard to write about. After something happens to you, you go to write it down, and either you over dramatize it, or underplay it, exaggerate the wrong parts or ignore the important ones. At any rate, you never write it quite the way you want to.

It was comforting to know I had fallen and could fall no farther.
