I skipped the thirty-one years between 1938 and 1965 and jumped to the section entitled __unitaki Today._ Of course, the book__ __oday_ being 1970, it was hardly today__ __oday._ Still, writing the history of one town obviously imposed the necessity of bringing it up to a __oday._ And even if such a today soon ceases to be today, no one can deny that it is in fact a today. For if a today ceased to be today, history could not exist as history.

You can__ observe historical events; you can__ question historical actors; you can__ even know most of what has not been written about. What has been written about therefore takes on an importance that may be spurious. A few lines in a memoir, a snatch of recorded conversation, a letter fortuitously preserved, an event noted in a diary: all become luminous with significance__ven though they are merely the bits that have floated to the surface. The historian clings to them, while, somewhere below, the huge submerged wreck of the past sinks silently out of sight.

All history is one continuous pestilence. There is no truth and there is no illusion. There is nowhere to appeal and nowhere to go.

He granted them all a month__ furlough; however, upon their return they discovered that they had all been relieved of duty and permanently discharged.

With his son Fidelito at his side, he rode on top of a Sherman tank to Camp Columbia, where he gave the first of his long, rambling, difficult-to-endure speeches. During the speech, smiling Castro asked Camilo Cienfuegos, __ow am I doing?_ and the catch phrase __oy bien, Camilo_ was born.

As citizens and professionals, historians may naturally form a desire, as Carl Becker puts it, __o do work in the world._ That is, they might aspire to write history that is not only of scholarly value but also has a salutary impact in society. Becker defines the appropriate impact and the historian__ proper role as __orrecting and rationalizing for common use Mr. Everyman__ mythological adaption of what actually happened.__hat process is never simple, however, when the subject involves divisions so deep that they led to civil wars. One issue that inevitably leads to controversy is the extent to which history involves moral judgment. Another is the power of myths, exerting their influence on society and acting in opposition to the findings of historical research [190_91].
