Every child should be taught how to read, write and think.

This is the setting out.The leaving of everything behind.Leaving the social milieu. The preconceptions.The definitions. The language. The narrowed field of vision. The expectations.No longer expecting relationships, memories, words, or letters to mean what they used to mean. To be, in a word: Open.

A relationship is a process. If you have nothing to learn - you have a slave to teach. 's why schools are effective.

It doesn't matter the materials but what you do and how you interact. Relationships are the most important in the art of teaching. A school can have the most beautiful "stuff" but it's the care and commitment of a teacher. What matters most is a true teacher with the real stuff inside and helping others discover that real stuff inside themselves.

Correct teaching brings out human excellence.

They say you can tell a lot about a country by the way it treats its prisoners_I believe the same can be said for how a country treats its children

A teacher can kindle your mind and let you memorize information, but true education is often self-education.

To reach a child's mind, first reach a child's heart.

It still amazes me that we insist on teaching algebra to all students when only about 20 percent will ever use it and fail to teach anything about parenting when the vast majority of our students will become parents.

Grades really cover up failure to teach. A bad instructor can go through an entire quarter leaving absolutely nothing memorable in the minds of his class, curve out the scores on an irrelevant test, and leave the impression that some have learned and some have not. But if the grades are removed the class is forced to wonder each day what it__ really learning. The questions, What__ being taught? What__ the goal? How do the lectures and assignments accomplish the goal? become ominous. The removal of grades exposes a huge and frightening vacuum.

For those of you who think that I have my life altogether, I definitely do not. Every season brings new challenges. For example, since I had my fifth child, I am notoriously 5-10 minutes late everywhere no matter how hard I try to be on time. I would like to say that I am 'fashionably' late, but that isn't the truth either. Running in a mad dash in a parking lot (all holding hands of course) to make it somewhere 5 minutes late (instead of 6 minutes cause that makes a big difference) while one child is missing shoes and my hair is going in every direction. Yep, that is my family.

An HBCU that is not inherently revolutionary in 2016 is irrelevant.An African American Studies class that is not inherently revolutionary in 2016 is irrelevant.

Homeschooling is not a race ... You will not get behind, nor do you have to live with guilt that you feel the need to catch up.
